In order to help potential dog buyers, the French Club de l'Epagneul Breton developped a selection scale for sires and dams that specifies officially the quality of these dogs, though not being a substitute to the awards and titles allowed by the SCC (The French Kennel Club).

Rating 1 / 6

A dog is rated "1 point" as soon as it succeeded the confirmation examination by an expert, only based on its sifficient appropriateness to the breed standard.

This "Confirmation Test" is compulsory to obtain the delivery of a domestic pedigree. It is not required for the delivery of an export pedigree which is then issued without any garantee concerning the type of the dog and then only certifies the identity of the ancestors.

Rating 2 / 6

The first truly interesting level of the scale is 2/6, rating 2 points. To get this rating a dog must :

  • have succeeded the confirmation examination ;
  • have been rated as "Excellent" in a show where the judge is an expert of the breed, choosen by the committee of the Club de l'Epagneul Breton ;
  • have passed successfully the T.A.N. (Test d'Aptitudes Naturelles - Natural Aptitude Test) ;
  • present a HD rating not worse than "C" (= mild).

So, to compare to a dog just "confirmed", this quotation garantees a potential breeder that he gets a stud dog or a brood bitch showing true qualities regarding the type of the breed.

Rating 3 / 6

The rating "3/6" is equivalent to 3 points. This rating goes to :

  • a dog that won the title of "trialer" either in springtime or automn trial,
  • a bitch that won a qualification "Excellent" in autom trial or a "Very Good" one in springtime trial,

plus the same requirements in show and for the hips than for the "1/6" rating.

Rating 4 / 6 ("Recommanded")

This is the third interesting degree of the scale, scoring 4 points. To get this scoring the dog must :

  • have succeeded the confirmation examination ;
  • have been rated as "Excellent" both in a show where the judge is an expert of the breed, choosen by the committee of the Club de l'Epagneul Breton and at the yearly National Breed Show (the "Exposition Nationale d'Elevage du Club de l'Epagneul Breton") or an equivalent show ("Super Speciale"). The awards must be obtained with two differents judges ;
  • have succeeded the "REP" test (Deep water retrieving test).
  • present a HD rating not worse than "B" (= fair).

Moreover :

  • males must have won 2 EXC (or 1 CACT or CACT) both in springtime and automn trials ;
  • females must have won 1 EXC both in springtime and automn trials.

Rating 5 / 6 ("Elite B")

A "Confirmed" dog is rated "Elite B" (5 points) if it meets the following requirements :

  • HD must not we worse than "B" (= fair) ;
  • Male : it must have breeded in first generation 3 "4/6" rated dogs with at least two non-sister dams ;
  • Female : it must have breeded in first generation 3 "4/6" rated dogs.

Rating 6 / 6 ("Elite A")

A "Recommanded" dog is rated "Elite B" (5 points) if it meets the following requirements :

  • HD must not we worse than "B" (= fair) ;
  • Male : it must have breeded in first generation 3 "4/6" rated dogs with at least two non-sister dams ;
  • Female : it must have breeded in first generation 3 "4/6" rated dogs.

Moreover, the pedigree ancestors of the dog must totalize 20 points according to a special rating list.
